What is Organization Development?

That’s a rhetorical question, but one intended to set the stage for a bigger question. What the heck is happening to the Human Resource Development side of Human Resources?

SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) has defined the discipline succinctly, has established an infrastructure of learning and knowledge and a representation of the employer in legislative affairs, and elevated the profile of Human Resources. Yes, I realize that HR is being increasingly called to task for not adding value to organizations, but there is an answer that is staring us in the face – the other side of HR – Human Resources Development (HRD). 7 Tips for Making Performance Management Really Simple

simpleGotcha with the headline, didn’t I?  Wouldn’t it be just wonderful if I really could help you make performance management simple?

Actually, I can help you do that, but not with words, with tips and tricks or with hope and a prayer.  It will happen with hard work, a well-designed program, leaders who are skilled and accountable for developing talent and delivering performance, and ultimately measuring whether the program achieved improved performance and higher levels of talent.

So my headline was a little misleading but I’ve been watching how many articles and posts are headlined with “X tips to something,” and they are very popular.  So I wrote one a week ago and my readership skyrocketed.  I was musing about what that says about us (us, because I love the “X tips” too.) The Brutality of Artistic Feedback

Performance evaluation in corporate America – the dreaded, ineffective leadership responsibility that few ever do well.

The concept is actually good….provide expectations for performance, feedback on work accomplished, and develop skills for the future. How can we argue with that?  Why is it so gosh darned difficult to do it well?

I have new insight, based on a recent experience of my own. Let me explain.

I found out I enjoyed the creativity of the design, as well as the technical and detailed work involved.
